Does a lemon shaped head on an ultrasound definitely mean spina bifida?

Spina Bifida
preg2 asked:

at our 20 week scan we had to go back in as our baby is said to have a lemon shaped head which can be a sign of spina bifida. No other signs present so I was curious if anyone knew of someone that this has happened to where everything turned out to be fine?

see “Ultrasound Screening Signs in a High-risk Population” by Campbell et al. - this journal article study found 1% of the fetuses studied had “lemon sign” on ultrasound but did not have spina bifida and were structurally normal at birth.

If it’s not too late there is blood tests to check for spina bifida. (I believe though it’s between the 16th and 18th week) You can also get ambionic fluid withdrawn and tested for spina bifida . Unfortunately, it’s predominate on my husbands side. Taking extra folic acid three months prior to getting pregnant and while pregnant can help prevent this disability.
